What Is Cowboy Mounted Shooting?

Cowboy Mounted Shooting is a competitive equestrian sport in which riders navigate a course at full gallop while shooting .45 caliber single-action revolvers loaded with black powder blanks at a series of balloon targets. The sport is sanctioned by the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA) and governed by strict rules that ensure safety, fairness, and authenticity.
Competitors are judged on time — the clock starts when the horse crosses the start line and stops at the finish. Missed targets add five-second penalties. The combination of riding skill, shooting accuracy, and course strategy makes every run a unique challenge.
How a Run Works
The Course
Each course consists of 10 balloon targets arranged in a specific pattern. Riders carry two revolvers, each loaded with 5 blanks, and must shoot all 10 targets in the correct order.
The Guns
Competitors use .45 caliber single-action revolvers firing black powder blanks. The concussive blast from the blank pops the balloon — no projectile is ever fired.
The Clock
The run is timed from start to finish. A missed balloon adds a 5-second penalty. The fastest clean run wins. Top competitors finish courses in under 30 seconds.
The Attire
Authentic Western or 1800s-style attire is required — cowboy hat, boots, and period-appropriate clothing. It's part of what makes the sport a living tribute to Western heritage.

CMSA competitions are divided into classes so every rider competes against others at a similar level. You start where you are and advance as your skills grow.
New riders learning the basics of the sport. Walk/trot pace allowed. Perfect for first-timers.

Safety First
Safety is the top priority in mounted shooting. All guns fire blank cartridges — no live ammunition is ever permitted at a CMSA event. Range officers are present at every match, and all competitors must complete a safety orientation before competing. The sport has an outstanding safety record thanks to strict protocols and a culture of responsibility.
